Send in the Clown
“Send in the Clown” takes audiences back to the nostalgia of 1960, when “The Bobo The Clown Show” was the beloved children’s program. However, with declining viewership, the show’s producers face the challenge of securing a bigger sponsor, leading to compromises that threaten the show’s creative integrity. As the pressure to attract a younger audience mounts, the new sponsor, “Cue Toothpaste,” insists on introducing a young sidekick to “Bobo The Clown” to promote their toothpaste brand. Following an extensive audition process, Tommy E. is chosen as Bobo’s new sidekick, much to the dismay of Stu K., the actor portraying Bobo. The play unfolds through the recollections of an older adult reminiscing about childhood events, transporting the audience to a bygone era of innocence and imagination. Through the lens of nostalgia, the story explores the complexities of the entertainment industry, the compromises made for commercial success, and the toll it takes on the artists involved.
