The Battery
THE BATTERY is a one-act play set in the present day at White Point Garden, known as The Battery, in Charleston, South Carolina, on the evening of July 3rd, the final day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Marcus Hayes, a civil engineer with a ring in his pocket, and Diana Cole, a history teacher, are interrupted mid-proposal when a portal in time rips open and two soldiers come crashing through: Corporal James Whitfield of the 69th Pennsylvania and Private Samuel Holt of the 1st South Carolina, still locked in the final hand-to-hand violence of Pickett’s Charge. Over one extraordinary evening, four people are forced to confront the full weight of American history not as abstraction, but as flesh and blood standing three feet away, until the portal reopens and each soldier must choose whether to return, and who to become when he does.
