The Eruv

Drama · 6 actors

On a Friday afternoon in October, seventeen year old Talia Brenner looks up at a utility pole near her bus stop and sees that the neighborhood’s eruv wire, the boundary that allows observant Jews to carry things outside their homes on Shabbat, has broken. She calls the synagogue and waits for Rabbi Moss to arrive and fix it before sundown. While she waits, her afternoon fills up. Marcus, a classmate who isn’t Jewish, stays to keep her company and ends up learning what the wire means. Becca, her best friend, who has kept religion at arm’s length for years, shows up expecting a quick errand and stays for something much bigger. Ezra, her younger brother, arrives holding his prayer book and turns out to understand faith better than anyone else on the corner. Mr. Papadopoulos, the Greek American neighbor whose fence has quietly supported the eruv for thirty one years, invites them all up to his porch, sets out cookies, and ends up making a phone call he has owed a friend for three years. By the time Rabbi Moss arrives to make the repair, the street corner has become something closer to a sanctuary. As the wire is mended and the first three stars appear, Talia finds she is not losing her faith so much as discovering a new shape for it, one built less on certainty than on showing up, noticing what is broken, and staying until it is fixed.
