Terri is closing out her lane on a Thursday afternoon when a man she doesn’t immediately recognize gets in line. It takes thirty seconds before she realizes: this is the father who walked out on her family when she was nineteen. He has a full cart of groceries. He has a rewards card. He is going home to someone. He does not know who she is. She scans every item.
