In Venice, Florida, wealthy Gerald Coolie’s death leaves his valuable real estate up for auction. Allen Cunningham hires bandits Mitch and Wobbles to kill Fitzsimmons, the likely highest bidder. However, they mistakenly murder Fran Simmons before realizing their error and killing Fitzsimmons. Sheriff Rex Miller and Deputy Buddie Bay investigate the murders as the mayor offers a $10,000 bounty for the killers. Texas Ranger Marshall Rufus T. Caldwell arrives in Venice searching for his father and assists with the investigation. He meets the alluring Eleanor “Nell” Coggshell and encounters his old nemesis, outlaw Frank “El Diablo” Sanders. Allen schemes to acquire Venice Palms Estates while Mitch and Wobbles grow nervous about getting caught. Deputy Buddie Bay confronts El Diablo in a standoff, with Rufus intervening to prevent bloodshed. A retired FBI agent surveils her neighbors, a Russian spy couple, as Allen tries to eliminate loose ends. Mitch and Wobbles turn the tables on him at gunpoint. The story concludes with shifting alliances and agendas in the eccentric community of Gulfshore Keys.
