The Ghost Light
When theatrical producer Maxwell Prentiss reopens the abandoned Chatham Theatre for a one night revival, he reunites the surviving cast of a production that ended in murder a decade ago. As rehearsals progress, the company discovers they remember the original blocking with eerie perfection, and young actress Dorothy Fane begins experiencing unexplained phenomena, hearing voices and finding objects that shouldn’t exist. Retired Inspector Gale, who never closed the case, reveals that murdered actor John Woodford left behind a coded letter hidden in the text of the play itself. As the company performs the climactic scene, the truth surfaces, acclaimed actress Vera Langdon wrote the play under a pseudonym to expose a powerful producer’s decades old theft, Woodford discovered the code and was killed for it, and the theater’s ghost light has burned for ten years as a vigil for justice. In the end, the truth emerges not through conventional detection, but through the theatrical mechanism itself, the past restaged becomes the past revealed.
