TEN-MINUTE
The Great Squeeze
At a crowded reception in the President’s House in 1814, Dolley Madison sparrs with a disapproving Federalist senator as rumors of the advancing British army spread through the room. As guests flee and cannon fire draws closer, Dolley and her enslaved servant Paul Jennings race to save George Washington’s portrait, chopping it free of its frame before making their own escape.
